2017 Word of the Year

2017 will be here in a few short hours. I don't do resolutions, but I choose a word or phrase to be my focus for each year. For 2016, it was "Let Go".

2017's word is "Peace".

In the last few years, I've been working toward a more peaceful life by focusing on walking with Jesus, letting go of extraneous things, and focusing on the important things in life. I generally don't tend to be an anxious person. I have clinical depression for which I take medication, but I don't have anxiety. That being said, I've found myself being very uptight and nervous this year, especially the last half of the year.

Politics has caused part of my anxiety. I am quite unhappy with the results of the presidential election. And, for the first time, my extended family and I are not in agreement in our political views.

World events don't help my level of anxiety these days. Having our country's election interfered with by another country is a bit disconcerting. Terrorism continues throughout the world. The global refugee problem shows no sign of letting up.

Closer to home, I'd like to see marijuana legalized in our state since it may bring some symptomatic relief for my migraines, but previous bills have never gotten out of committee. And my chronic migraine shows no sign of letting up.

"Peace" seems like something worth pursuing this year.

I'm going to start with John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." Starting with Jesus is always a good idea.

I'll continue daily meditation and prayer. Beyond that, we'll see what disciplines, books, and music help me to become more peaceful. And, of course, what does Jesus say about peace?

What recommendations do you have? What is your word this year? or resolutions?
